SOUND REDESIGNS
This page features a selection of sound redesigns I created to hone my skills as a sound designer. A brief description is provided for each followed by the redesign video including breakdown of how some of the redesign was achieved.
Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) - Netrunner gameplay
Having replayed Cyberpunk numerous times, I wanted to make a sound redesign of one of my favourite parts of gameplay, Netrunning. Therefore I focused making futuristic UI sounds and weapons that match the visual style. I challenged myself and created a gunshot from scratch using synthesis and no library samples.
God of War (2018) - Intro Scene
I wanted to make a realistic Foley orientated redesign so I chose the intro scene from God of War (2018) to match the realistic graphics. All of the sounds created for this redesign were recorded whilst on a hike with my family. I edited all sounds using plugins, manipulation techniques and layering.
I used my own voice to create the vocal part of Kratos. However, his voice is much lower register than mine so had to manipulate it using formant shifting and saturation. This produced a natural sound at a lower timbre. To make the tree felling more impactful, I used the Decapitator plugin to add a low end crunch to the mix. As it is a saturation plugin, it also added frequencies to make the sound fuller helping flesh out the mix.
PERSONA 3 RELOAD - BLAZE OF LIFE
After I finished Persona 3 Reload I knew I wanted to create a redesign for this attack as I thought it would be a good way to practice layering and 'beefing up' my foley recordings. For the bulk of this redesign, I used manipulated fire recordings that I achieved by wrapping an old t-shirt and tape around a bamboo stick. I then sprayed it with WD-40 and ignited it. The wind also played a part in making the raw flames audio sound vicious.
SUPER SMASH BROS ULTIMATE - SORA FINAL SMASH
As a fan of Kingdom Hearts and the style of sound effects used in that genre of game, I wanted to recreate the audio for Sora's Ultimate Attack from Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
I used the Serum plugin to completely change the sound of various objects I recorded to create anime style sound layers. Adding samples into the noise oscillator whilst using LFO's to modulate the phase and pitch parameters. For example, the main anime style layers originated from a squeaky door.
SOUND TRACK BONUS
Since Kingdom Hearts features heavy usage of soundtracks, I decided to create a short piece to go alongside my redesign. I wanted it to sound similar to tracks from the game, so I drew inspiration from composer Yoko Shimomura and some of the tropes used in her music. You can hear the track below:
